Research Degrees

At the University of Lincoln, a vibrant research community embraces research students. Many of our most talented postgraduate students come from around the world to realise their potential with us.

A PhD can prepare you for many careers while providing the opportunity to create and explore an exciting knowledge base. We look for research students whose work will impact on ideas, communities and people on a global scale.

Original Investigation

Undertaking a research degree gives you the opportunity to determine your own field of study. The aim of research is for students to acquire in-depth knowledge and experience in a particular subject area through original investigation. Students undertaking research degrees are provided with specialist supervision from experts in their subject area. By choosing Lincoln, postgraduate students will benefit from working with specialists in their respective fields who have national and often international reputations.

Types of Research Degrees

Students undertaking research degrees normally register for an MPhil (Master of Philosophy) with registration transferred to a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) after a year if appropriate progress has been made.

Opportunities also exist to transfer from Masters degrees to MPhil or PhD, providing that progress on the work demonstrates that development to this level can be achieved.

The MRes offers a flexible programme of formal research training for recent graduates, lecturers or practitioners whose work requires application of specialist research skills. The MRes may act as the preliminary stage for the completion of an MPhil or PhD.

Periods of study

The period of time involved in completing a PhD is usually at least three years full-time and four years part-time. MPhil degrees normally take one or two years to complete full-time and three years part-time. The MRes Masters by research normally takes one year full-time or two to three years part-time.

Candidates for research degrees must normally hold a first or second class honours degree from a British university or an equivalent qualification. Please contact us to discuss your award if you are not sure.
