BA (Hons) Advertising and Branding
About this Programme
The BA (Hons) Advertising and Branding degree aims to provide students with a comprehensive picture of branding and consumers, and the role of advertising in this process.
This course will be available from September 2010 and is subject to validation.
The programme examines advertising and branding across a broad spectrum of scenarios, including business and non-commercial organisation, SME’s and multinationals.
From the advertising perspective, students develop a comprehensive picture of the role of advertising in business and society, understand how the advertising industry operates, are able to evaluate, generate and implement advertising strategies, and appreciate some of the theoretical and practical possibilities and limitations of the discipline.
From the branding perspective, students will understand and be able to use branding techniques and processes at the strategic and operational level, as they learn how to develop and manage brands throughout their lives.
All of this will enable students to take an influential role in the advertising or media industries when they graduate or take advantage of a broad range of business career opportunities. For example, a recent graduate is employed in an advertising agency as an Advertising Account Executive, dealing with “pay-per-click” advertising campaigns.
The programme encourages students to develop their skills and personal capabilities so that they can take full advantages of available career opportunities and continue to develop themselves personally and professionally on graduation. These can be gained through placement opportunities, activities with the Chartered Institute of Marketing Student Chapter, and attendance at advertising guest lectures. The programme strives to prepare students to be inquisitive about the market environment, adventurous in understanding risk and adaptable to new market challenges and opportunities.

MSc Sport Science
About this Programme
Sport science support is most effective when performers receive complementary advice from experts in a range of disciplines. It is essential therefore that the sport scientist has an appreciation of what each discipline can offer, in addition to the specialism that he or she has. The MSc in Sport Science exploits the Department’s expertise in biomechanics, physiology and psychology to provide students with broad understanding and practical experience across these areas, and the opportunity to specialise further in a discipline of their choice.
Course aims
This interdisciplinary programme is designed around core modules
that will develop the student’s knowledge and skills in the three
scientific subjects as well as in research methods and design. A
range of elective courses allows the individual to build on these
foundations by specialising in one area, or by continuing to study
across different disciplines. Each pathway will prepare the student
for completion of a major piece of independent research or applied
practice.
Units of study
- Research Methods & Advanced Research Methods
- Sports Science Support
- Core units in Biomechanics, Physiology and Psychology
- Elective units covering advanced theory, research skills and applied support in Biomechanics, Physiology and Psychology (two units per area)

MA Digital Media
About this Programme
The media ‘landscape’ has undergone exponential change over the last decade and continues to develop and evolve with considerable momentum. The convergence of media forms and digital technologies signals an unprecedented revolution in media production and modes of distribution. The internet and significant developments such as YouTube and the BBC iPlayer are changing the way we consume media products in the 21st century. New platforms are emerging, in particular the ‘mobile web’, the ubiquitous mobile phone is developing into an increasing powerful ‘smart’ device, offering high-speed wireless connectivity to media networks, anywhere and everywhere. The highly successful iPhone has had unparalleled impact since its launch and the mobile platform is still being defined, opening up new avenues for development and exploitation.
The MA in Digital Media is aimed at students wishing to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the digital media area, or for media professionals to ‘convert’ existing knowledge and expertise to accommodate and understand rapidly shifting and evolving digital technologies. The Department for Culture, Media & Sport in their recent interim report ‘Digital Britain’ states: ‘The necessary education, skills and media literacy programmes to allow everyone in society to benefit from the digital revolution will be a central part of the Digital Britain work and key to its success’.
The programme also offers graduates from various disciplines the opportunity to explore these exciting new developments. The Digital Britain report continues: ‘The digital economy relies upon hybrid professionals who can bridge technology, creativity and business. It needs leaders and managers throughout business, understanding and being able to manage links between business strategy, innovation and creativity, and technological deployment’.
