Foundation Degree (FdSc) Logistics Management

The Foundation Degree Logistics Management is a Work Based Distance Learning (WBDL) degree and aims to break down the barriers between learning at work and learning at university. The programme takes into account the high levels of skills and learning that are demonstrated every day in the workplace and provides a degree framework to support and accredit this learning.

Logistics underpins the ability to project military force.  This capability must always ensure battle winning effectiveness while remaining affordable in resource terms. The University of Lincoln acknowledge that these requirements call for a high level of managerial underpinning and an associated level of academic expertise.  Hence, the FdSc Logistics Management presents military logistics specialists at all levels with the opportunity to enhance managerial and academic skills within their particular area of operational expertise.  The first year of the degree is accredited through previous academic qualifications and/or relevant professional experience leaving the student the final year to complete as described below.

Flexibility

Flexibility is a key feature of this programme and University of Lincoln regulations permit military students to formally interrupt their studies, at no extra cost for a period of up to 24 months in light of Out of Area or other such commitments.  In effect students can stop the clock on their studies until they are in a position to continue.

Distance Learning

The purpose of distance learning is to enable students to work and study at their own pace and in their own way at a time and place of their choosing, enabling a work and life balance that meet individual needs. In this way it keeps the student motivated and synchronised with their individual aims and objectives. In addition, the ability to work independently and perhaps with limited resources is a key competence in the modern organisational world. Many students who choose distance learning over classroom based study have many demands on their time and resources, and many may have been out of the formal academic environment for some time. 

How You are Assessed

The course and associated assessments are at final year foundation degree level hence, applicants should be prepared to offer the commitment and dedication to produce work of an appropriate standard.  Throughout the programme assessment methods are designed to enable you to develop your potential and are based on the development of close working relationships between tutor and individual student.  Hence, the assessment strategies aim to reflect the focus of the course on independent self-managed learning. Feedback on assessments should be within three to five working days for formative assessments and fifteen working days for summative assessments.

Assessment Feedback

The University of Lincoln's policy on assessment feedback aims to ensure that academics will return in-course assessments to you promptly – no later than 15 working days after the submission date.

Methods of Assessment

The way you will be assessed on this course will vary for each module. It could include coursework, such as a dissertation or essay, written and practical exams, portfolio development, group work or presentations to name some examples.

Duration

Typically, students are expected to take 18 to 24 months to complete the programme, but this will vary according to each individual's personal circumstances and work commitments.

Level 4(The First Year of the Degree)

Accreditation of Prior Certified Learning (APCL) General credit of 120 CATS points is awarded to students who meet the minimum entry criteria of a Level 4 qualification or equivalent.

Developing Academic Writing & Associated Skills

In addition, the ability to work independently and perhaps with limited resources is a key competence in the modern organisational world. Many students who choose distance learning over classroom based study have many demands on their time and resources, and many may have been out of the formal academic environment for some time.  Therefore, this module aims to equip students both to respond to the requirements of distance learning study and also to develop essential skills for work and career development.  Moreover it aims to provide and develop analytical skills to underpin other modules and to support projects and problem solving exercises whilst fostering life-long learning skills.  This module encourages attention to the presentation of academic work by supporting students to think through their arguments and evidence and to use appropriate forms of communication, preparing students for final year degree study.  At degree level, learning moves beyond simply memorizing facts to the confines of academic argument, where personal opinions and evidence are supported with academic references and citation. This module aims to equip students with essential skills for academic study in order to successfully complete their Foundation Degree. This involves developing the ability to think independently and logically and the confidence to communicate in an appropriate and credible manner.

Developing as a Leader and Manager

This module is designed to provide students with an opportunity to explore the behavioural aspects of organisational life. The module is designed to focus on the participants’ own experience and students will be given the opportunity to examine the extent to which this, together with organisational behaviour concepts provide a vehicle for enhancing their understanding of organisational life and the part that they play as managers and leaders within this process.  The module can provide a framework for the development of self-awareness and emotional intelligence in relation to others and interpersonal and social processes as they impact on personal and organisational effectiveness. Furthermore, an introduction to the concepts of Transactional and Transformational Leadership is intended to enable participants to develop a conceptual understanding that is grounded on personal experience and which has practical relevance.  It is also intended that this module will provide a vehicle for students to develop their abilities in relation to learning and group skills, which have relevance for the programme as whole. Consequently, the module aims to also address key concepts and issues of leadership and management.

Advanced Logistics and Supply Chain Management

This module is designed to enable students to apply the academic principles associated with logistics and supply chain management to begin to analyse the topic and the transformational and competitive landscape that has become one of today’s key business issues; hence this module will provide students with an opportunity to explore and analyse the fundamental aspects of advanced logistics and supply chain management.  As the economic environment becomes more volatile Logistics and Supply Chain Managers are faced with increasingly complex and dynamic tasks and environments.  Broadly speaking effective Logistics and Supply Chain Management can cut costs and enhance customer value.  Consequently, the supply chain can be a sustainable source of advantage in today’s turbulent global market place, where the provision of strategic flexibility and efficiency against unpredictable demand are keys to sustainability and success.  Hence, students will be encouraged to study the most recent concepts and theoretical advances to emerge within the field and to comprehend and analyse associated ideas in a practical context. 

Work Based Logistics Project

Project leadership is an example of one area within the practical logistics working environment that can provide the opportunity to develop and demonstrate managerial critical thinking ability. The skills required for the management and leadership of work based projects are transferable from the logistics workplace to the academic arena, hence this module aims to link a work based logistics project to the achievement of academic learning outcomes.  The chosen project is linked to the module outcomes by student negotiation with an appointed tutor where appropriate academic and practical targets and outcomes are agreed. Moreover, the student has the opportunity to provide evidence to demonstrate how the selected project will meet with the modular demands and overall learning outcomes.  In doing this, students can identify and evaluate the internal and external environments within which the chosen organisation operates and use this analysis to identify an appropriate ’real time’ project.  The module also provides the student with an introduction to fundamental diagnostic tools and techniques.  Accordingly, students are asked to consider the extent to which successful project management requires them to be a researcher and facilitator at different stages of the managerial process.  All projects require formal ethical approval, and students will be expected to apply for ethical approval from the University of Lincoln. In addition ethical approval may also be required from the student’s employer or chosen organisation of study.

This is a final year foundation degree course with the first year being accredited through previous academic qualifications and/or relevant experience. The University of Lincoln has recognised the high standard of phase one and two training received by military logistics JNCOs through formal accreditation of the first year of the foundation degree programme. This leaves JNCOs and, by exception other suitably qualified logistics specialists the final year of the degree to complete as described under the modules tab.  Applicants should have a relevant Level 4 qualification such as a HNC, C&G Level 4 or similar.

Fees quoted will be for the whole programme but these can be broken down into individual years of study and can be paid annually using Enhanced Learning Credits through the ELCAS funding system.

Additional Costs

For each course you may find that there are additional costs. These may be with regard to the specific clothing, materials or equipment required, depending on your course. Some courses provide opportunities for you to undertake field work or field trips. Where these are compulsory, the cost for the travel, accommodation and your meals may be covered by the University and so is included in your fee. Where these are optional you will normally be required to pay your own transportation, accommodation and meal costs. With regards to text books, the University provides students who enrol with a comprehensive reading list and you will find that our extensive library holds either material or virtual versions of the core texts that you are required to read. However, you may prefer to purchase some of these for yourself and you will be responsible for this cost.
