The BA (Hons) Business Management degree is a Work Based Distance Learning (WBDL) degree and aims to break down the barriers between learning at work and learning at university. The programme takes into account the high levels of skills and learning that are demonstrated every day in the workplace and provides a degree framework to support and accredit this learning.
This is a final level top-up degree course with level one and two being accredited through previous academic qualifications and/or relevant experience. The University has recognised the high standard of phase one and two training received by military administration officers and SNCOs through formal accreditation of the first two levels of study of the undergraduate degree programme. This leaves officers and SNCOs, and JNCOs the final year of the degree to complete as described under the modules tab Applicants should have a relevant Level 5 qualification such as a Foundation Degree, HND, CMI Level 5 or similar.

For each course you may find that there are additional costs. These may be with regard to the specific clothing, materials or equipment required, depending on your course. Some courses provide opportunities for you to undertake field work or field trips. Where these are compulsory, the cost for the travel, accommodation and your meals may be covered by the University and so is included in your fee. Where these are optional you will normally be required to pay your own transportation, accommodation and meal costs. With regards to text books, the University provides students who enrol with a comprehensive reading list and you will find that our extensive library holds either material or virtual versions of the core texts that you are required to read. An effective military force cannot function without an underpinning Business and Human Resource acumen. Personnel are at the heart of any organisation and to ensure operational success effective management of those personnel and associated resources is key. The University of Lincoln acknowledge the wide variety of challenges that military administrative specialists are faced with and the associated level of academic expertise that is required. Hence, the BA (Hons) Business Management degree is a final year 'top-up' course which presents military administrative specialists at all levels with the opportunity to enhance managerial and academic skills within their particular area of operational expertise. The first and second years of the degree are accredited through previous academic qualifications and/or relevant professional experience.
Flexibility is a key feature of this programme and University of Lincoln regulations do permit military students to formally interrupt their studies, at no extra cost for a period of up to 24 months in light of Out of Area or other such commitments. In effect students can pause their studies until they are in a position to continue.
Students can have up to ten hours contact time with their tutors with the remainder being self-directed study. A range of teaching and learning methods are used on the BA (Hons) Business Management including using Blackboard which is an online teaching and learning resource. Teaching on the course is through a range of methods such as podcasts, wikis and blogs with the aim to facilitate a community of practice learners. Blackboard is also used for assessment purposes.
The Course and associated assessments are at final year degree level hence, applicants should be prepared to offer the commitment and dedication to produce work of an appropriate standard. Throughout the programme assessment methods are designed to enable you to develop your potential and are based on the development of close working relationships between tutor and individual student. Hence, assessment strategies will reflect the focus of the course on independent self-managed learning. Feedback on assessments should be within three to five working days for formative assessments and fifteen working days for summative assessments.
Typically, students are expected to take 18 to 48 months to complete the programme but this will vary according to each individual's personal circumstances and work commitments.

Study Skills for Distance Learners
The module provides students with a structured framework within which to develop the essential skills for distance learning. This module encourages you to take personal control of your learning and to balance the freedoms and disciplines inherent in a distance learning environment. Using models of theory and practice embellished by your personal experience, you can develop your ability to self-motivate, manage your own studies and reflect on how you learn. You have the opportunity to evaluate theories and practical models to challenge and to expand on received wisdoms to support both your academic and practical development.
Integrating Professional Business Experience
Reflection as a technique for aiding and reinforcing learning is a powerful tool in professional development and a wide range of learning environments. Reflective practice is about learning and developing, through examining what we think happened on any occasion and how we think others perceived the event. The manager must open their professional practice to the scrutiny of others, becoming a more effective manager as a result. At an organisational level critical reflection is the basis for maintaining the appropriate alignment of an organisation and forms the basis for strategic planning and organisational change.
This module aims to provide you with a structured framework within which to reflect on experiences during previous formal managerial training or within past and present business working environments. The course encourages you to develop your own abilities to practice reflection in the practical arena by critically evaluating your own ideas against academic theories and models, challenging and expanding your own individual management skills. You are encouraged to facilitate this process through the production of a personal Learning Log, individual reading and study, and face-to-face or online discussion with your tutor.
Management of Change
This module aims to enable you to develop your workplace skills in the management of change by investigating your own organisation in relation to change management from a number of perspectives. You will have the opportunity to consider your organisation’s business and market position— how it is structured and how it operates—to understand the context within which change happens. In addition, you can consider how organisational structure and culture may support or inhibit change as well as evaluating management of change theoretical models. This module also enables you to explore the impact of change on people and the skills needed by effective change agents and organisations.
Upon completion of the module, you can use your learning to inform a study of change management in your organisation and to make recommendations about change strategies for the future.
Applied Problem Solving in the Business Workplace
You will have the opportunity to look at some more unusual approaches to the solving of complex problems and at techniques used outside of your own organisation and experience in this module. At an early stage you can select a complex problem in your workplace to study throughout the unit and you will be expected to develop, integrate and apply your learning, ideas and techniques in a real practical context.

The dissertation provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate your capacity to work independently on a major piece of research and to utilise and build on skills and subject expertise developed in the promotion of your professional and personal skills.
