English Language Requirements
To ensure that you are able to cope with the demands of your course whilst studying and living in the UK, we require a high level of written and spoken English.
The basic requirements for all courses are:
- O-Level or GCSE English Language grade C or above
- Most courses require British Council IELTS band 6.0 or above, however MA English and MA Creative Writing require 6.5 and all Journalism programmes require 7.0.
- TOEFL minimum score – paper based test 550, or internet based 80

Help with your English
Learning English as a Foreign Language
There is open access self study English language development available for all overseas students. Where there is a need, the university can offer English for Academic Purposes courses for an additional fee. Tuition in study skills such as dissertation writing and presentation skills is also offered to all students.
