This programme is designed to develop the knowledge, competences and values needed to carry out the specific duties of an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) under current mental health legislation.

The Course

This programme aims to provide the opportunity to develop the knowledge, competences and values needed to carry out the specific duties of an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) under current mental health legislation.

The University of Lincoln has a record of specialist mental health training, having run the former Approved Social Worker programmes for a number of years. The Approved Mental Health Professional programme has run since 2009.

This is a professional, Master's level, post-qualifying programme, approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The programme was reassessed and approved in 2015 by the HCPC.
This programme commences with a seven week 'Academic Block' followed by a ten week 'Practice Placement Block', which includes a 40 day supervised, statutory mental health placement. The academic block is full-time, however the mental health practice placement can be taken on a longer term part-time basis if required.

All students are provided with comprehensive documentation and relevant textbooks and are enrolled as students of the University of Lincoln, allowing access to university resources including the library and electronic Blackboard system.

The academic programme block covers three core modules over a seven-week period with attendance from Monday to Thursday each week. This is a sustained seven week commitment.

The supervised mental health practice placement is taken over 40 days. This is flexible, and can be achieved through a placement duration of two to five days per week (The option of completing this through a two day per week placement may be attractive to part-time applicants). Staff are available to help support the arrangement of these placements if necessary.

Teaching is delivered through a mixture of classroom based activities, class discussions, small group work on relevant case related issues, extensive reading and practice based activities. The Professional Practice Placement aspect is undertaken within a professional practice setting. Learning support is provided through an academic tutor and a Practice Assessor. The Practice Assessor is a professional working in practice as an Approved Mental Health Professional.

Contact Hours and Independent Study

Due to the nature of this programme weekly contact hours may vary. Postgraduate level study involves a significant proportion of independent study, exploring the material covered in lectures and seminars. As a general guide, for every hour in class students are expected to spend at least two - three hours in independent study. Approved Mental Health Professional Practice Placement (Core)

A 40 day placement is central to AMHP training. Whilst supervised by an experienced AMHP, the placement allows the practitioner to observe and then undertake Mental Health Act Assessments and to be exposed to all of the other elements of day-to-day AMHP practice. Practitioners compile a portfolio of evidence which enables them to demonstrate the competencies for AMHP practice set out in the Mental Health AMHP Approval England Regulations 2008. In addition to practice-based work, a number of university-based classroom days are scheduled at intervals throughout the placement, to allow for consolidation of knowledge.

Critical and Reflective Application of Knowledge (Core)

Advanced Mental Health Practitioners, have to make decisions which can have far reaching consequences for vulnerable individuals and for families and communities. AMHP’s are required by statute to bring a ‘social perspective’ to this decision making process. This module provides an opportunity for an in-depth scrutiny of evidence relating to social perspectives, and of the most-up-to-date evidence about human decision-making, particularly in situations of uncertainty. Risk assessment and risk management are central to much of practice in mental health services. These concepts will be critically assessed and set within the framework of values and legal requirements which AMHP’s are required to follow.

Mental Health: Law and Policy (Core)

The Mental Health Act (2007) is central to the processes with which Approved Mental Health Professionals must engage, including mental health assessments, compulsory admissions to psychiatric hospitals, applications to court, and production of reports for review tribunals. This module will provide detailed knowledge of the guidance to Mental Health Act and related legislation.

Theories and Perspectives on Mental Disorder (Core)

Mental health legislation has explicit statutory guidance which requires the Approved Mental Health Professional to apply a ‘social perspective’ in any Mental Health Act assessment in which they are involved. This module will provide the underpinning theoretical and practice knowledge to enable the AMHP to thoroughly understand and critique the medical perspectives which will be brought to the assessment by the assessing doctor, and to offer a well-informed social perspective.

Assessment on this programme will take a range of forms and will vary between individual modules. This includes a multiple choice test, a case scenarios test, a practice portfolio supported by written evidence from the Practice Assessor, written assignments, a commentary on case scenarios, and a reflective commentary on a aspect of practice or case.

  • A recognised professional qualification and two years post-qualifying experience in one of the following: Nursing, Social Work, Psychology, or Occupational Therapy.
  • Substantial and relevant mental health experience. This will be judged by sponsoring employers and at interview with the University, but will usually mean several years of working in mental health services, whether pre or post professional qualification, and work which has required decision making in relation to complex mental health issues and has allowed you to observe mental health act assessments.
  • Nomination by your employing agency
