The Role of the Humanities in Design Creativity

International Conference
East Midlands Media and Technology Centre
University of Lincoln UK

15-16th November 2007

Hosted by the Faculties of Art, Architecture & Design
and Media, Humanities & Technology

Outline

This conference considers the influence of the Humanities on the processes of design. By taking both historical and contemporary perspectives, the conference explores how the traditional inter-relationship between word and image, highlighted for example in architecture, theatre, interior design and urban design, has in more recent years become obscured by the growing dominance of image as the only legitimate means of developing and communicating design ideas.

This situation is exacerbated by the increasing marginalization of the Humanities in higher education, brought about by the monopoly of technological development and related fields such as advertising. Added to this is the increasing confusion between the subjects that make up the Humanities and modern developments in media, that has in turn led to a blurring between knowledge and information. Quite how we can restore - or indeed radically transform - the traditional dialogue between intellectual enquiry in the humanities and design creativity will serve as the over-arching theme of this conference.
