This conference considers the influence of the Humanities on the processes of
design. By taking both historical and contemporary perspectives, the conference
explores how the traditional inter-relationship between word and image,
highlighted for example in architecture, theatre, interior design and urban
design, has in more recent years become obscured by the growing dominance of
image as the only legitimate means of developing and communicating design ideas.
This situation is exacerbated by the increasing marginalization of the
Humanities in higher education, brought about by the monopoly of technological
development and related fields such as advertising. Added to this is the
increasing confusion between the subjects that make up the Humanities and modern
developments in media, that has in turn led to a blurring between knowledge and
information. Quite how we can restore - or indeed radically transform - the
traditional dialogue between intellectual enquiry in the humanities and design
creativity will serve as the over-arching theme of this conference.
The conference will be organized around a series of parallel paper sessions with presentations by academics as well as practitioners. These will focus on the following key themes:

Jonathan Sawday
Professor of English Studies, University of Strathclyde, and author of Engines
of the Imagination (Routledge, 2007).
Nader El-Bizri
Visiting Professor of Visual Studies, University of Lincoln, and author of The
Phenomenological Quest between Avicenna and Heidegger (Global Publishers,
2000).
Eric Parry
Founding partner of Eric Parry Architects, London, and past visiting professor
of architecture at Harvard University and University of Houston.

Road access is via the A1 with intersections at Newark (A46) from the South and near Retford (A57) from the North. The city is 40 miles east of Nottingham on the A46 and 40 miles south of the Humber Bridge on the A15.
The station is a few minutes walk from the campus and London Kings Cross is less than two hours away.
Humberside Airport is 40 minutes away with domestic, European flights and international links available. East Midlands Airport is an hour's drive and Birmingham International an hour and a half.
