On the Day
We endeavour to make every students’ graduation day as memorable as possible. The ceremony itself takes place in the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral followed by a celebration reception in the grounds of Lincoln Castle.
Each student can attend with two guests and will receive two copies of the graduation brochure and tickets to the celebration reception, where drinks are served to the accompaniment of a live jazz band.
The graduation ceremonies are spread across the whole day, morning (10:30am), afternoon (2:30pm) and evening (7:30pm).
During The Ceremony
Just before the presentation of awards begins, a speech will be given about the ceremony, and etiquette.
Guests are reminded to respect fellow audience members when taking photographs or filming the Ceremony. We ask guests to stay seated, and to not obstruct other guests’ view.
If you are bringing children to the graduation ceremony, we politely ask that you try to keep them quiet and seated throughout the ceremony, in respect of this special day.
We politely ask guests with children to sit towards the back of the Cathedral, as this will make it easier to reach the exit in case you need to leave during the ceremony. Any noise is amplified in the Cathedral and can quite easily spoil the special day for the other guests and graduands.
Please note: due to health and safety regulations, children over two years old will require their own ticket and will not be able to sit on laps. The graduation ceremony will last approximately one hour and fifteen minutes to one hour and thirty minutes.
After the Ceremony
Once all the graduates have been conferred their awards, the audience will be asked to stand as the procession leaves the Cathedral. Everyone is asked to remain standing for this. The graduates will be part of the procession and it is important that guests meet graduates within the Castle grounds after the ceremony.
All graduates and guests are then invited to attend the Celebration Reception at the celebration marquee in the Castle grounds, lasting approximately one hour. If you are intending to have your photographs taken after your ceremony, we advise students to attend the celebration reception first as the reception marquee will be closed after one hour. The photographers will be available all afternoon.
The University does not provide parking for the graduation ceremonies. There are pay and display car parks near to the Cathedral and Castle that also have disabled parking bays. Please allow plenty of time to arrive in Lincoln and find a parking space before the ceremony begins as these car parks can get busy.
