Your Questions Answered

Q: What do I need to bring with me if I am going into residence at Brayford?

A: You will need to bring with you for your Room: a selection of bedding and towels, and if you are coming to an ensuite room: a loo brush and loo rolls, and as you will be responsible for the cleaning of this area you may wish to bring with you something to assist you in this process.

If you feel you are going to need to extend the provision of electrical sockets in your room please bring a flat multi socket extension lead which meets BSI 363A (1984 Standards) which are individually fused, rather than an adaptor. (Please make certain that the cable does not constitute a trip hazard when in use.)

For the kitchen: a small selection of crockery, cookware and cutlery. Please don’t bring anything too expensive it may well get damaged or even if it survives the year, get left behind when you leave us! A drying up cloth or two! large black plastic sacks for the rubbish bin, dusters, jay cloths, cleaning materials.

If you are intending to bring food with you please remember that you will have to share the freezer capacity with 5 other people so don’t bring too much frozen food.

Q: If I live in Halls can I bring a pet?

A: Sorry no pets allowed, mainly due to the problem of cleaning and smells and that some students are allergic to fur, feathers etc. So if we do not have any at all then everyone is treated the same.

Q: If I live in Catered Hall (Riseholme Park Campus) can I bring a kettle?

A: Yes many students bring small electrical appliances, however, please be aware of the relevant clause in your Accommodation Agreement. Any potentially dangerous situation will be referred to the University's Technical Office for advice.

Q: Do I need a TV Licence?

A: Yes... normal TV Licensing Authority regulations apply and we can advise you that Halls of Residence have been monitored by TV detector vans in the past. Our advice is "Better be safe than sorry"

Q: Can I arrive before the advised start date?

A: Halls of Residence are not available to students until the date of opening. However if you have difficulties with transport or in the case of International Students, flight and travel plans, which make it difficult to arrive on the due day then please contact  Accommodation Services who will consider your circumstances and try to advise or assist you with the problem.

Q: Can I arrive after the date advised in my offer of accommodation?

A: Yes, but if you intend to arrive outside of normal office hours, 9.00Am to 4.30pm Mon to Fri then please contact the Accommodation Service to advice them of your expected date and time of arrival.

Q: Do I need personal insurance for my belongings?

A:   Not really as all University Halls of Residence have a contents insurance of £4,000.00 included in the Residence Fees. Further details of this scheme will be provided on your arrival at Halls and will include the facility to increase the amount  of cover if you consider the sum insufficient to cover your possessions.

Q: Can I have visitors in my room or flat?

A: All resident students are responsible for their own guests, in respect of security, disturbance and damage. The Accommodation Agreement signed by resident student is clear on this matter and any comment or complaint about visitors will be dealt with by residential management staff under University Regulations.

Q: If  I have accepted Catered Halls and find that I would prefer Self-Catered Halls is it possible to change?

A: If we have vacant rooms in other halls then it is possible to transfer rooms, however after an initial change, the Accommodation Service would impose an administrative charge for any subsequent move.
N.B. An exchange of rooms is only possible between University owned accommodation.

Q: Is it necessary to move my belongings out of Catered Halls at the Christmas and Easter vacation periods?

A: Yes it is as they are periods of time when the University may deal with external conference bookings. The Accommodation Services has information on storage companies who offer a student rate if a student has any difficulty with this matter.
N.B Please note that this only applies to the accommodation at the Riseholme Park Campus.

If you have any other queries please feel free to contact the Accommodation Service.
