Professor Owen joined the University of Lincoln from the University of Liverpool where he had previously been Head of the Department of Engineering and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. During his 28 year career at Liverpool he was extensively involved with international partnerships and recruitment, including being closely involved with establishing the Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University in Suzhou, near Shanghai.

Professor Owen is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, as well as a Member of the Energy Institute. He began his professional career with the UK Ministry of Defence. He has supervised 26 PhD students and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences. His current research, which has most recently been funded by EPSRC and UK defence agencies, is related to the air flow over naval ships and how this impacts on the operational envelope of a ship-borne helicopter.
