Riseholme Facilities

Students at the Riseholme Park campus have all the benefits of a vibrant city life whilst studying and learning within the peaceful, unspoilt and natural environment of a beautiful parkland campus just 3 miles north of Lincoln city centre.

The campus is centred on Riseholme Hall, originally a Bishop's Palace with views to Lincoln Cathedral, down tree-lined avenues, across Riseholme Lake.

The campus possesses a full range of modern student teaching, accommodation and recreational facilities, including bar, restaurant and café, whilst taking full advantage of our rural environment with extensive sports facilities. These include all weather and grassland pitches, gym and swimming pool, golf course, bridal paths, riding school, canoeing and fishing lake.

Equine Unit
The Equine Unit includes stabling for 30 horses, riding, training and rehabilitation facilities and a treadmill that is used in both teaching and equine research. Additional DIY equine housing is available through Riseholme Park Farms. The new Indoor Riding Arena has been completed and is in full use, alongside the already existing 2 large outdoor arenas. The building of the equine High Speed Treadmill has now been completed and is fully operational.

The Riding Arena
The Riding Arena will greatly expands the teaching of practical subjects such as riding and training and allow greater opportunity for events and competitions. It provides further opportunities to build on the University of Lincoln’s high quality equine research especially in the areas of exercise physiology, nutrition and behaviour.

Small Animal Unit
The Small Animal Unit provides our students with the opportunity to work with a wide variety of familiar and exotic species, including cats, dogs and rabbits, chipmunks, chinchillas and marmosets, reptiles, tropical and temperate fish, insects, spiders and molluscs, whilst

Behaviour Clinic
The Behaviour Clinic supports our work in behavioural consultancy and problem behaviour management. Larger animals including horses, cattle, sheep, poultry and deer can also be studied in the field. Overall these facilities support our national reputation in high quality teaching in animal management and equine science and our internationally recognised research in companion and farm animal behaviour and welfare.

Riseholme Estate
In total, Riseholme Estate comprises a total of 200 hectares of broad leave woodland, mixed farmland, deer park, dairy farm, hatchery, lake and landscaped gardens. This diversity of habitats supports a great variety of vertebrate and invertebrate life, including rare species of dragonfly and butterfly and over 60 species of birds and wild mammals. These natural resources provide a backdrop to the Biological Sciences programmes delivered at Riseholme and are an invaluable resource for teaching and research in Animal Sciences and Conservation Biology.

Riseholme Plant Centre
A vital resource, especially for students attending Horticultural courses to practise nursery craft and gain practical experience in growing and caring for plants. It includes the students’ demonstration gardens amidst the acres of pasture and woodland of Riseholme estate. For more information click on Riseholme Plant Centre

Car parking
Student car parks are provided at the Riseholme. For security reasons, a permit is required and can be applied for following enrolment. Parking is subject to availability on a daily basis. The City Campus is close to a number of private car parks.

Student Health Service
There are nurses at the Riseholme campus from Mondays to Fridays between 9 am and 11 am. The nurse treats minor ailments, makes appointments and arranges transport for students to see a doctor. The nurse provides students with information and advice on contraception and other health and welfare services. Students register with a local GP during the first week. Student Services at the City Campus provides lists of local doctors, dentists and opticians and other services.

Student Counselling and Welfare Service
Student Services provides information and advice on issues and problems including funding, local amenities and finances. The counselling service offers time and space to discuss personal or course- related issues that are affecting students' lives.

Student Bar
University of Lincoln Student Union (ULSU) Co-operative runs the bar at Riseholme. By day the bar area act as a meeting place and a chance to relax offering pool table, games machines and vending facilities. It also has television and music Jukebox, there is also SKY available.

Chaplaincy
The chaplaincy supports students in all aspects of everyday life. People from all faiths and denominations are welcome. Hospital and home visits are available in cases of illness and family problems.

Career Advisory Services
The Careers Service provides information, advice and practical help. There is a careers information section in each of the libraries on the two main campuses. Appointments are made via students Services for individual guidance interviews and support.

Student Learning Resources
This free and confidential service is available to all students. Learning support means help with any aspect of learning - in the workplace, or on campus.

We provide support to improve writing, reading and numeracy skills, information technology and dyslexia. With the introduction of Key Skills, learning resources can play an important role and a dedicated resource rooms have been introduced at Riseholme. More information is available to students during induction week.

Library Services
The Library contains most of the course books students need and a wide range of periodicals. There is a non-fiction section and foreign-language tapes and books. Daily newspapers are held in the library and videos, both general and course-related, are available.

Learning Resources

In the autumn of 2004 the Learning Resource Centre moved to its new home in the Great Central Warehouse and became the Lincoln Library.

The library facility forms part of a new, proposed, student-friendly quadrant of amenities on Brayford Wharf East including the Students’ Union, student-related retail outlets and possibly a new arts centre.

Meanwhile the university’s original library and media centre will focus on teaching and research in media, humanities and computing subjects.

We cannot do your work for you, but we will help you sort out your problems and we will advise you on alternative ways of using our facilities. We have developed a wide range of 'teach yourself 'materials to help you learn at your own pace. We also provide a good selection of manuals, books, guides, leaflets and training videos to help you learn to use and get the most from our facilities.

Computing facilities

All students of the university are expected to develop computing skills and we provide equipment and support to help you. You will find a wide variety of equipment including PCs, Apple systems, Unix workstations and other specialist machines. A university-wide computer network gives access to your files, software, services and the Internet at any campus.

Library facilities

We provide access to over 240,000 books, 1,000 periodical titles and almost 14,000 electronic journals. We also hold daily newspapers, videos, CD-ROMs and dissertations. We have over 1 ,000 study spaces and provide group workrooms. There are several special collections, for example, a local studies collection, a law library and a European collection. The library catalogue is computerised and access to this catalogue, CD-ROMs, the Internet and other electronic information sources is available through the University's computer network.

Our staff provide specialist help in all subject areas.

Media facilities

Advice on where you may access media services will also be available from the new Library. Facilities include audio and video, digital and analogue capture, editing, plus sound-recording and television studio facilities. There is also a varied and extensive range of digital and analogue video cameras, tripods, audio recording equipment, microphones, digital still cameras, 35mm cameras and other media related accessories for students to borrow. We train students where necessary in using the equipment and offer specialist advice on all aspects of pre-production, production and post-production techniques.

The Lincoln Media and Broadcast Production Centre is located within the old Lincoln Learning Support Centre and is the primary teaching and production location for specialist students in the Faculty of Arts and Technology. It is also accessible to all members of the university. Designed in consultation with the industry it is at the cutting edge of new digital technology.

Language facilities

The language facilities are located on campus in Hull and Lincoln; and comprise laboratories, seminar rooms and open-access facilities for self-paced study.

We also have:

  • Dedicated areas for viewing satellite broadcasts
  • Extensive collections of foreign language films and documentaries
  • Books and audio cassettes to teach yourself a new language
  • Computer-based learning packages
  • Foreign journals, newspapers and tourist brochures

Foreign students can also use the facilities to improve their English, providing an ideal opportunity for authentic language exchange with native speakers.

Recreation and Leisure

The Lincoln Campus hosts a sports centre with some of the best facilities in the country. There are on-campus cafes and bars as well as the Delph Bar which is run by the student union.
