Introduction

This exciting and innovative short course in Equine Health, Behaviour and Welfare is designed to provide the horse owner, keeper or rider with the knowledge and the science behind common health and management issues that can affect the welfare of the performance or the leisure horse.

Course Details

Tutorials have been developed with expert knowledge from the fields of equine health, behaviour and welfare and educational materials have been supplied from leading welfare charities and organisations. During each tutorial the fundamental knowledge for each topic will be presented and examples given of its application to everyday situations to improve the management and the welfare of the horse. The topics studied include:

Course Structure

The course has been developed to facilitate a flexible and entertaining approach to learning and employs multimedia and interactive delivery systems including the Lincoln Virtual Horse "Lindon E. Tutor". Students will also have access to the University support systems including the library and e-journal access.

Course Timetable

The course will run for approximately a year from the start date. The first few weeks of the course are set aside for induction and associated activities. Then following induction there will be 24 weeks of semi structured part time study (not including breaks for public holidays). On completion of the structured tutorials students will have the remaining time to complete the necessary coursework required to complete the course.

Course Materials

All students will be provided with on-line access to the essential course materials.

Assessment

Self assessment of progress is completed online through the use of interactive media and quizzes. Students will be formally assessed through their contribution to the discussion boards that run alongside the tutorials and a final structured report.

Qualifications gained

All students who successfully complete the course will qualify for a University certificate in "Equine Health, Behaviour and Welfare" with HE accreditation of 15 CATS at level 1.

Entry Requirements

The course is designed for those who are enthusiastic and stimulated to develop their knowledge of equine health, behaviour and welfare. Applicants must be 18 + and have regular access to a PC/MAC with a broadband internet connection.

Applicants should also have access to horses e.g. via a riding school, local rescue or charity or through a private establishment. Typical minimum educational requirement is 180 points from GCE/VCE qualifications, BTEC, OCR Nationals or equivalents preferably with a life sciences component. Applicants without formal qualifications but with experience with horses will also be considered.

Cost and Application
