The Animal Behaviour Clinic at the University of Lincoln will be offering additional Puppy Training for members of the public and their puppies from September 2011.
The new style of classes is based on the concept of Life Skills. This approach to raising puppies aims to enable puppies to develop the skills they will need to live in harmony with their families and the society in which they find themselves. At the same time they aim to improve the wellbeing of the dog as they share with their families what is an increasingly stressful world.
In addition the skills have been developed to help dogs to make choices which reduce tension between them and others in their daily lives and to take responsibility for being well behaved so that the need for their family members to constantly instruct them is reduced. Ideally these skills are incorporated into the daily life of the puppy so that families don’t need to find vast amounts of additional time to train their dogs, but can set up an environment where their pup is helped to learn and practice good behaviour on an ongoing basis. This will of course take discipline and thought from owners, but once the habits of interacting are established it will become a natural way of interacting with your dog.
Specific skills you will work on include sit, down, stand, walking nicely on a lead, being able to settle and amuse themselves appropriately, having good manners around people and being comfortable being touched and groomed.
The classes will help you to understand the concepts, learn the skills and work out how to integrate them into your lifestyle.
The classes are open to puppies up to 20 weeks of age (at the date of the first class) who have had at least one vaccination. There will be a maximum of 6 puppies in a class and the classes will be taught by staff with qualifications and experience in the field of animal behaviour and training.
Each course will consist of 7 classes and will be held at the Riseholme Park Campus of the University of Lincoln. The first session is for people alone and will cover the background information which will help you through the course, let you get to know your instructors and how things will work and also ask questions that may be concerning you. This session lasts an hour and a half – an hour of teaching and half an hour afterwards to enjoy some refreshments, get to know one another and ask questions. The rest of the classes will each last an hour.
