Prison Research

  • Update of National Systematic Review of Prisons and Mental Health (Brooker, Sirdifield and Gojkovic), funded by the Prison Health Research Network

  • A health needs assessment of those serving sentences of 12 months or less will take place in the East Midlands remand prisons. The project has been commissioned by the East Midlands CSIP office and will report in March 2009. Please contact Prof. Charlie Brooker for further information on this project

Youth Justice

  • Evaluation of New Commissioning Framework for Children in Secure Settings (Gale, Brooker and Fox), a two-year study funded by the Department of Health
  • A health needs assessment will be undertaken of all children in secure settings in the East Midlands (secure children's homes, secure training centres and a YOI). This study has been commissioned through the East Midlands CSIP office and will report in the Spring 2009. The project has strong links with the study above which is evaluating the impact of the new commissioning framework for such services. Probation Research

  • The team have recently submitted a successful bid to the East Midlands Research for Patient Benefit Programme to fund a project examining the prevalence of serious mental illness and patterns of service access in a probation population. This project aims to inform service delivery and improve offenders' access to services through charting the prevalence of serious mental illness in this group, examining offenders' needs and investigating barriers to service access.
  • Health Needs Assessment for Offenders on Probation – to be conducted in Nottingham City, funded by the Care Services Improvement Partnership
  • Development and Evaluation of Mental Health Awareness Training for Probation Staff (Sirdifield, Brooker, Gale, Gardner and Pollard) – for probation staff in the East Midlands, funded by the Care Services Improvement Partnership
  • Pre-Sentence Report Study: Staff at the University of Lincoln have recently submitted a proposal for funding for a study examining the contribution of Registered Medical Practitioners to the production of pre-sentence reports
