First Meeting of Network Steering Group
The East Midlands
Offender Health Research Network Steering Group met for the
first time on the 4th of December and will meet bi-annually from
now on. We established that the terms of reference for this
group would be in line with those of the National Offender
Health Research Network as follows:
- to develop a multi-disciplinary, multi-agency network focused
on offender health care innovation, evaluation and knowledge
dissemination
- staff capability building through training opportunities and
active involvement in health care research
- to work toward developing the frequency and quality of
user/carer involvement in offender health care provision and
research
- to develop a "pathway to research", outlining the processes
required to successfully undertake research in the Criminal
Justice System, including information on funding, research
ethics and governance, and practical information about
conducting research in such a unique environment
However, the group does not believe it would be working
efficiently it it were to simply replicate the work of the
national network, so there will be an emphasis on service user
and carer involvement and network development in the East
Midlands.
If you are involved with any research in this field on
the East Midlands please send us a weblink to your project(s)
that we can add against your name on the members list to
csirdifield@lincoln.ac.uk as we would like
to advertise existing offender health research in the East
Midlands as much as possible.
Future plans for the network include:
- Hosting a 'trade-fair' for people actively involved in
criminal justice research
- The co-ordination and support of student research (to be
discussed at the next steering group meeting)
- Development of service user capacity in the meeting (to be led
by Torsten Shaw from Making Waves)
- Broadening the steering group membership to include
representation from agencies such as the Police and the National
Probation Service
If anyone knows of anyone from the Police/probation with
an interest in healthcare research or Masters/PhD students with
a focus on criminal justice and health, please pass on their
details to
csirdifield@lincoln.ac.uk
Also, please check out the website when you can for details of
conferences, seminars etc in our region
Service User Involvement in Research
One of the network's current priorities is to improve capacity for service user involvement in criminal justice research. If you are currently working on a bid for research funding and are looking to involve users of health services in the criminal justice system in your research please contact Torsten Shaw on Torsten@makingwaves.org for support with this.
