What is the PGCE?
-
A teaching qualification for staff who are teaching and supporting higher education programmes.
-
It is accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and meets the UK Professional Standards for Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education.
-
Successful completion of the programme means that colleagues achieve Fellowship status of the HEA.
What is it aiming to do?
The PGCE wants to provide new and experienced colleagues with the
opportunity to develop their own professional identity as higher
education practitioners. The programme aims to fully support
colleagues in their move to become effective and reflective tutors
capable of responding creatively to the diverse, and sometimes,
conflicting demands made upon them. The programme has, at its heart,
a set of underpinning professional values which includes having
respect for learners; a commitment to encouraging participation in
higher education; the need for a scholarly approach to the tasks in
teaching and learning and recognition that professional development
is ongoing.
How do we meet the aims?
The PGCE is delivered on a part-time basis over two years (one
afternoon and one twilight session per week over two twelve-week
semesters in each of the two years). It is taught by a number of
tutors with a range of backgrounds and expertise within the
University. However, learning on the programme is seen as a
collegial activity with colleagues sharing experience and
participating in a range of learning and teaching activities in the
weekly group sessions.
Who is the programme for and what do I need?
The programme is for colleagues delivering and/or supporting higher education programmes in universities and other contexts, eg HE level programmes in further education colleges or vocational areas.
Colleagues need:
-
a first degree, an HND or, in certain circumstances, equivalent professional qualifications;
-
teaching hours to groups of students across the two years of the programme;
-
a named mentor from your subject area or discipline who will be able to observe and support your teaching;
-
the facility to pay the fees for the programme
Please contact us if further information is needed about any of the above requirements.
