Programme Details

The degrees of PhD/MPhil are premier research qualifications for those who are, or aspire to be, senior academic or administrative leaders of primary, secondary or tertiary educational institutions or university lecturers or researchers. The doctorate caters for British, EU and international students.

Key Features

  • Research focus choice
All research degree students decide the focus for their research in negotiation with their supervisors (2) and individual tutorials are held at mutually agreed times. Tutorials may be undertaken by e-mail or phone in addition to face-to-face.
  • International focus
Students will be supervised by staff with international reputations who themselves lecture and research internationally and there are frequent visits to the Institute by other international experts. Students are welcome to join the CERD study tours abroad.
  • Flexible delivery mode
Full and part time modes are available, starting at any time during the year.

Assessment

PhD students present a thesis of 80,000 words; MPhil students 40,000 words, both with an oral defence.

Course structure and timing

Research students commence by undertaking a two semester MRes, at the end of which they register an outline research proposal for approval by the Institute's and the University's Research Committees. The time span in total is: Full time students, MPhil 18-36 months; PhD 24-60 months. Part time students: MPhil 30-48 months; PhD 36-72 months.
