8. Making a Difference

Facilitating access to and delivering the best quality, evidence-based, values-based health and social care interventions to meet the needs and aspirations of service users and their families and carers.

‘This capability is concerned with ensuring that people have access to interventions and services that have proven efficacy in addressing specific needs. It is essential that people are able to utilise services that value them and those that support them and that will help to make a positive difference.’

(Department of Health 2004)

What this means is: Making sure that service users, their families and carers have access to a range of high-quality care and treatments that work well, are delivered appropriately and meet their needs and hopes for the future.

To make a difference you need to:

  • understand the notions of evidence-based and values-based ‘best practice’ (eg as included in NICE guidance and Psychosocial Interventions training).
