Faculty of Business & Law - Research

POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH STUDY (PhD)
Lincoln Business School and Lincoln Law School

Lincoln Business School and Lincoln Law School have a vibrant research community.  It is home to over 67 research students and offers extensive programmes in research methods, as well as regular research seminars.  There is an active and stimulating programme of visiting speakers throughout the academic year. We have a good completion rate (which earned us the recognition by the ESRC).  A further advantage is the way we seek to involve our post-graduate research students in the Faculty research.

ESRC Recognition and RAE 2008 Acclaim for the
Lincoln Business School PhD Programme

In 2006 the Faculty of Business and Law was granted doctoral training recognition by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). This indicates that our training and preparation for PhD completion passes an important, national criterion for quality. The programme was awarded a ‘+3’ recognition (for the PhD and the MPhil; the MRes started in 2007) and CASE, which involves the development of arrangements to fund doctoral students. More recently the 2008 RAE Panel specifically commended the PhD programme as being an internationally excellent component of the research environment.

The MRes degree is an ideal programme to follow, either in preparation for a PhD or to enhance existing research skills. In regard to the latter, career professionals may find this training particularly useful. The MRes offers flexible entry and exit points, namely Certificate, Diploma, and Masters level. It may also be followed in short-course mode, subject to availability.

Our aim is to help our research students become members of the world wide research community with the necessary social and intellectual skills and the necessary motivation.  To this end we stimulate our students to work closely with and become part of the academic structure of the School, by having them work with departments and research units, where possible combining their research with inputs into teaching and project activity.

At Lincoln, we see post-graduate research as a route to developing mature researchers who can apply their experience and knowledge within an academic career as well as in research environments outside the university.  Having experience of teaching, commissioned research, and an understanding of administration and departmental business, prepares well for careers following on from graduation from an advanced research degree.

The School offers three post-graduate research degrees: the Master of Philosophy (MPhil), the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and the Master of Research (MRes).  The MRes is a taught course, to prepare the student for independent research.  The MPhil enables the student to explore novel areas.  The completed PhD is expected to take a leading role in research, for example as head of a research group.  All prepare the student for a career in and outside academia.
