Biography
Behzad has almost thirty years experience as an architect, researcher and lecturer working for a variety of public and private organisations and universities. He has extensive experience in the development of methodologies for appropriate use of computer simulation programs and their use as assessment tools to analyze the impact of design and construction on environmental performance of building, embodied energy and carbon-footprinting affecting climate change. He has widely published in sustainable planning and development, sustainable architecture and environmental design of buildings. He won the Best Paper Prize, 3 rd CIB International Conference on Smart and Sustainable Built Environments (SASBE), June 2009 and was awarded the International Award for Excellence by The International Journal of Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability for the Best Paper of the year in 2006.
He is one of the founders of Construction Emissions Community of Practice (CECoP). CECoP, a RIBA East Midlands Awards 2008 winner, is a voluntary and inclusive group of consultants and academics working on developing the protocols for calculating and understanding the carbon footprint of buildings.

Design of Woodland Sustainable Community Hall - Resulting from the Hill Holt Wood KTP, additional external funding of £257,500 (£157,500 from WREN and £100,000 from Lincolnshire Enterprise) was secured by Hill Holt Wood (January 2007) for the construction of the Community Hall. The design of the Hall was generated through a student design competition in my design studio in 2005-06. The exercise demonstrated the effectiveness of integrating teaching and research in design-based disciplines. The structure is being constructed using locally sourced materials and is designed to be ‘renewable' whilst exceeding all the requirements of the current Building Regulations. The success of this approach will be assessed post-construction via an integrated Post Occupancy Evaluation and a monitoring program. The project is intended to provide a detailed investigation of a practical approach to the design of self sufficient “off the grid” methodologies for building design and thus it defines a model for education and replication. Design characteristics include;
- self sufficiency in electricity production using photo voltaic, wind energy and the existing off grid generator.
- self sufficiency in water use and disposal
- self sufficiency in waste treatment
- low energy lighting
- efficient envelope using super-insulation, thermal storage, high specification glazing and air-tightness
- the construction include rammed earth walls with a shingled reciprocal roof
- construction started in March 2008, expected to be completed in 2009.
