Background and Expertise
Nicholas Temple is an architect and architectural academic with research interests in the historical and cultural contexts of city making, with specific focus on the European traditions. He joined the School of Architecture at Lincoln in 2006 as its head of school, having previously taught at Liverpool University, Nottingham University, University of Pennsylvania and Leeds Metropolitan University. A graduate of Cambridge University, and a Rome Scholar in Architecture at the British School at Rome (1986-88), Temple has been an invited speaker at institutions in the USA, South America, Europe and Russia, and has published widely on topics relating to the representational and ceremonial aspects of architecture and their urban contexts. This has resulted in a number of books, including Disclosing Horizons: Architecture, Perspective and Redemptive Space (Routledge, 2007) and renovatio urbis: Architecture, Urbanism and Ceremony in the Rome of Julius II (Routledge, 2011). At the same time, Temple has been teaching and researching on aspects of the humanistic background of architectural thought and its textual and linguistic foundations. This has led to a number of research papers and a book entitled The Humanities in Architectural Design, A Contemporary and Historical Perspective (co-edited with Soumyen Bandyopadhyay, Jane Lomholt and Renee Tobe). At Lincoln he has been instrumental in organising major international conferences and symposia on important interdisciplinary and theoretical issues; such as ‘The Role of the Humanities in Design Creativity’ (2007); ‘Architecture and Justice’ (2009) and forthcoming ’Architecture as Cosmology’ (2012) and ‘Architecture and its Geographical Horizons’ (2012). In addition to being a past Rome Scholar, Temple has also been awarded the Paul Mellon Centre Rome Fellowship for 2012.
