The Centre for Architectural Research embraces
the complementary research of staff from four research groups within
Lincoln School of Architecture. It has a research ethos focusing on
two inter-related fields:
- Sustainability and Human Ecology
- Design through Historical Continuity
Both of these draw upon the context of the School, its proximity to Lincoln Cathedral, where notions of tradition and innovation were perceived as integral parts of a unified ecological world view; and the rural nature of Lincolnshire, where historically communities have been sustainable and a zero-carbon economy is seen as achievable. Interdisciplinary, theoretical and practice-based research within the Centre is directed towards the development of high-quality sustainable environments from the macro-urban to the micro-environmental scale, through the following research groups:
Cultural Contexts in Architecture - architectural history, theory and philosophy, and aspects of architectural conservation;
Design Dynamic Space - interior and communicative environments (such as museums, retail complexes, theatre and event spaces) and conceptualisation, modelling and realisation of dynamic space and design theory;
Liveable Cities - issues of sustainable use and regeneration within the urban environment, bridging architecture, participatory design, urban planning and architectural education;
Sustainable Architecture - sustainability and technological development in architecture, including design, construction and post-occupancy monitoring of low-carbon buildings, thermal performance of tensile membrane enclosures, innovative structural forms and systems and technical aspects of architectural conservation.The Centre also currently accommodates the rapid-prototyping, colour 3D-printing, 3D-scanning, laser-cutting and CAD equipment of HATCH: Centre for Creative Industry Development, which is part-funded by Lincolnshire Enterprise.
