Introduction
The University of Lincoln was recently referred to as “The most dramatic transformation of any university in recent times” by The Times newspaper. Research is central to the university’s mission. The establishment of sound infrastructures that both sustain individual excellence and promote a vigorous research culture is an integral aspect of the faculty’s overarching research strategy. The Faculty of Art, Architecture & Design has a dynamic and rapidly expanding research agenda in those areas of the visual and applied arts integral to the creative industries and of crucial importance to cultural and socio-economic well-being. Of primary concern is active professional practice and engaged research within the context of relevant fields and of relevance to local, national and international communities.

The implementation of cohesive research policies and infrastructures has greatly strengthened the AAD research environment, culture and profile, firmly positioning research on the national and international stage. The Faculty now boasts an impressive range of collaborative links with prestigious public bodies, industry, universities and specialist international institutions, together with an equally impressive upward trajectory in both research performance and external funding.
Our long term research strategy is based on five key objectives:
- continued development of the AAD research culture,
infrastructure and environment, including further development of
well founded research centres and support for both experienced and
new researchers
- continued development and integration of a thriving PhD
programme and research student body
- continued development of engaged research that bridges practice
and theory and contributes to a national and international
reputation for excellence
- continued development of collaboration with research users,
universities, specialist institutions and other public bodies,
building on our increasing profile at regional, national and
international levels
- continued development of sponsorships and funding awarded by
AHRC, Arts Council, industry and wide range of other sources.
The Nature and Structure of the Research Profile
|
In developing and extending the research environment, we have
appoint academic leaders at professorial level and benefit from
the support, advice and engagement which they bring to the
staff. These have included Professor Norma Starszakowna, Chair of
the RAE panel of Art and Design in 2001, Professor of Design Maxine
Naylor, Professor of Fine Art Michael Healey, and Mike Essen.
Together with staff and research students, such leaders have developed focussed research groups, brought together within ‘umbrella’ research centres, where researchers can share ideas, creative practice, experience and opportunity in a flexible, collaborative context. The centres also provide formal and informal mentoring for new staff, early career researchers and students. |
